Drywall estimating is a perimeter, a ceiling, and a waste factor. This calculator runs the standard takeoff and converts it into the three numbers you buy by: sheets, screws and mud.
The worked example
A 12×12 room with 8 ft walls: wall area = 2(12+12)×8 = 384 ft², ceiling adds 144 ft² → 528 ft². With 10% waste, that's 581 ft² ÷ 32 = 19 sheets of 4×8 (or 13 of 4×12). Screws land near one per square foot on 16-inch studs; mud at 0.05 lb/ft² means about 29 lb — half a big bucket.
4×8 vs 4×12: the joint tax
Every joint costs tape, three coats of compound, and sanding. Twelve-foot sheets can span a whole wall, eliminating butt joints entirely — the finishing-time savings is why pros carry them despite the weight (a 4×12 half-inch sheet is ~77 lb). If the sheet can't physically reach the room, the choice makes itself.
Openings and waste honesty
Standard practice ignores doors and windows — cutting around them generates offcuts that rarely reuse, so the "saved" area evaporates. Subtract only garage-door-sized holes. Simple rooms run 10% waste; angles, closets and slopes push 15%+.
