Comparing an apartment in square meters to one listed in square feet? Sizing a lot in acres? This area converter turns one value into square feet, square meters, square yards, square inches, acres, hectares, square kilometers and square miles instantly.
Why area conversions surprise people
Area scales with the square of length, so factors get squared too: 1 meter is 3.2808 feet, but 1 square meter is 3.2808² ≈ 10.764 square feet. Doubling a room's dimensions quadruples its area. This is the single most common source of conversion mistakes — the converter applies the squared factors exactly.
Square feet and square meters
The units of homes and offices. A 750 sq ft apartment is about 70 m²; a typical US house of 2,000 sq ft is 186 m². To estimate m² from sq ft, divide by ~10.8 (or multiply m² by 10.8 for sq ft).
Acres and hectares — the land units
One acre — historically the area a team of oxen could plow in a day — is 43,560 sq ft, about 90% of an American football field. One hectare is a clean 10,000 m² (a 100 m × 100 m square) and equals 2.471 acres. Land listings mix these constantly: 5 acres ≈ 2 hectares ≈ 218,000 sq ft.
