Stacked discounts multiply, they don't add: 50% off followed by an extra 20% off is 0.5 × 0.8 = 0.40 — that's 60% off total, not 70%. Always apply the second percentage to the already-reduced price.
How to calculate a discount
A discount is a percentage taken off the original price. Multiply the price by the discount percent to find your savings, then subtract to get the sale price: sale = price × (1 − discount ÷ 100).
